Got Data?

Did you know that SDSU is part of the Social Science Research and Instructional Center (SSRIC); a consortium made up of the CSU campuses?

It is an amazing campus resource that is not well known or well utilized. Although the focus is mainly on the Social Sciences, the resources are open to and used by other disciplines such as Psychology, Public Administration, Social Work, Public Health, and Criminal Justice.

As part of our membership, any faculty, staff or student from SDSU has access to the following databases:
  • ICPSR - The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is an integral part of the infrastructure of social science research. ICPSR maintains and provides access to a vast archive of social science data for research and instruction, and offers training in quantitative methods to facilitate effective data use.
  • Field Poll - The Field (California) Poll is an independent, non-partisan, media-sponsored public opinion news service and has issued over 2,000 different reports.
  • Roper Center - the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research is the leading educational facility in the field of public opinion. Through the maintenance of the world's largest archive of survey data, and through its programs of publication, presentation and advanced research, the Roper Center strives to improve the practice of survey research and the use of survey data in the United States and abroad.
Most of the databases may only be accessed through a computer using an SDSU IP address; at this time no off-campus access is allowed, expect for the ICPSR.  The ICPSR now allows usage from off-campus provided that (1) users must first create their accounts using a computer within the campus IP range and (2) they must validate their accounts every six months from within the campus IP range.

There are also a number of great instructional resources available on the SSRIC site at http://ssric.org.

The SSRIC hosts a student research competition each year with cash prizes.  This year there are three $5,000 prizes for: (1) best graduate paper, (2) best undergraduate paper, and (3) best use of quantitative data.  The competition will be on May 7, 2015 at CSU Sacramento.  Travel grants will be available to help with the costs of travel for those student’s that interested in  participating.  The deadline to submit papers is April 8, 2015.  More information can be found at: http://ssric.org/participate/src.

Want to learn more?

Coming on April 24th (10am to 12pm), a representative from the SSRIC council will host a free workshop that will discuss the SSRIC and its resources in greater detail.  It will take place in LL-260 and is open to all SDSU faculty, staff, and students.  Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first served basis.  We hope to see you there!
